History
Around 20 CE, during the reign of Herod Antipas, construction of the city began on the western shores of the Galilee. The city would become the capital in the region and was named to honor the Roman Emperor, Tiberias Augustus. Tiberias and the surrounding area hold immense significance for Christianity. Shortly after the city’s founding, Jesus began his ministry, making it the setting for some of his most famous miracles.
Lake Tiberias is the very same body of water where Jesus performed the miraculous act of walking on its surface. In the book of Matthew (14:25-27), it is written: ‘Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. His disciples saw him and were terrified saying, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus replied “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” In the life of Jesus, the lake was the site of one of the most awe-inspiring moments.
Coins with the Face of Jesus
During the excavations in 1998, archaeologists discovered a collection of Bronze artifacts hidden inside vessels. Found within this hoard were 58 rare coins with an image of Jesus. Many coins also had Greek inscriptions such as “Jesus the Messiah, the King of Kings,” and “Jesus, the Messiah, the Victor”. These coins, originating from the 10th and 11th centuries, are part of the most extensive assemblage of objects from this era unearthed in Israel!
