Travel Tips for Winter Travel to Israel
Israel is located in the Middle East, and the majority of people link the Middle East with dry deserts and arid climates.
Many people don’t realize is that winter in Israel is a unique and enjoyable season, albeit less defined than in European countries.
So, what is winter in Israel like? Is it a good time to take a tour of Israel? Experiencing winter in Israel depends greatly on your location and the activities you prefer. Some days are remarkably mild, while certain areas receive enough snow for skiing.
Let’s explore winters of Israel!
Winter in Southern Israel
Southern Israel has the resort town of Eilat, a town that many stay in before crossing over into Jordan to visit Petra, also it is close to Egypt. Eilat holds amazing shopping malls, beautiful coral reefs and an arid climate which makes scuba diving the perfect activity for the family! The temperature at the Red Sea in winter is around 72 degrees. The water is comfortable for a relaxing swin even in January and February. The air temperature is also around the same, 72 degrees making Eilat a lovely winter escape for those looking to warm their chilled bones in winter!
Experiencing the Dead Sea in Israel’s Winter
Israel’s winter weather makes the areas around the Dead Sea, Masada, and Qumrun very pleasant to visit. The cooler temperatures make hiking the snake trail at Masada a perfect day out! Visiting the Dead Sea and floating in the water is highly recommended. It is a must have experience when visiting Israel. During the winter the water can be a little cold, the temperature drops into the 60’s, compared to the 90’s during the summer!
Flash Floods
Like anywhere around the world, the weather can be extreme. Rain is a blessing here in Israel, but sometimes this can lead to flash flooding. Flash floods, although beautiful when they are running through the dessert cliffs, occur very quickly and can be dangerous. Therefore, we recommend traveling with an experienced tour guide who knows the area and how to avoid any dangerous situations.
Winter in Jerusalem, Israel
During winter in Israel, as you head north, temperatures become cooler. While temperatures in the southern part of the nation are in the 70’s, in Jerusalem the average temperature is in the 50s. Sometimes, the weather can dip further, and at times there may even be snow! In January 2022 a large amount of snow fell over the city. Can you imagine having a snowball fight in the old city?! What a thrill?
Although very rare, your tour could be delayed due to extreme weather. In the January 2022 snow, many businesses and roads shut down due to the snow, resulting in changes to the tour itinerary and schedule.
Winter at The Galilee, Israel
Experiencing winter in Israel along the Sea of Galilee, an area which played a significant role in Jesus’ ministry, is a transformative experience. In the Galilee area the temperature is a full 10 degrees warmer than Jerusalem, usually around the mid to high 60’s. The Galilee is one of the major suppliers of water for the country. This rain fills the Galilee basin and turns the surrounding hillside different shades of green. Due to drastic changes in weather, in recent years there has been less rainfall, which leads to droughts and the lake has shrunken in size. Notably, in 2016, after many years without significant rainfall, the Galilee fell 11 feet below the current level! Thankfully, now after many years of heavy rains the water level is nearly back to capacity.
Winter Adventures in The Golan and Mt. Herman
The Golan Heights, especially during winter, is one of the most picturesque regions of Israel. During the winter months it is colder, averaging in the low 50’s. The real difference in temperature though comes when you go up to the mountains and ascend Mt. Hermon.
Winter Sports in Israel
Have you ever thought about skiing in Israel? In the Golan during the winter you are in a winter wonderland! You can ski at the country’s only ski resort, and enjoy the alpine roller coaster as well! It is a fantastic event the whole family is sure to enjoy.
Whatever your preferences for winter activities, winter in Israel has something for you! We hope that whatever season you decide to visit Israel, it will be very soon!
